Determine your video ad campaign goals and then discover which of the YouTube ad formats will work best to reach those goals.

Types of YouTube Video Ads

There are in all 6 types of YouTube Ads:

  • Skippable video ads i.e. TrueView ads
  • Non-skippable video ads
  • Bumper ads
  • Overlay ads
  • Display ads
  • Sponsored cards

Some of the widely picked YouTube video ads are mentioned below with their description.

Know About These Different Types Of YouTube Ads

1.TrueView YouTube Video Ads

TrueView video ads come in two forms, In-Stream and Discovery also called In-Display.

In-Stream video ads play before the posted YouTube video. In-Display video ads appear as a sponsored suggested video in the top right sidebar above playlists and YouTube suggested videos.

Both In-Stream and In-Display video ads can be any length since the viewer can decide if he or she wishes to keep watching. In addition In-Stream ads are skippable with “Skip Ad” buttons appearing after 5 seconds.

Both options are pay per view though views are defined differently for each ad type.

TrueView ads allow you to advertise with how-to videos, product demos, video testimonials and more.

2. Pre-Roll i.e. Non-skippable YouTube Video Ads

These video ads makes you compulsory watch the videos.

Just as it sounds, these video ads must be fully viewed by the user. The user does not have the option to pass over the video, therefore you are charged for each view. The video must be at least 15 seconds long and can still be inserted in the beginning, middle, or end of a video.

Although the non-skippable video ad sounds like a great options since viewers must see your content, you are not able to really gauge engagement as they must view the whole video. This is also one of the most expensive options are you are paying for each view.

It’s no secret that non-skippable ads are somewhat unpopular. They can be intrusive, and most viewers wish they weren’t there at all.

3. Bumper Ads

Bumpers are 6 seconds long. They are non-skippable like Pre-Roll ads but are pay per view like TrueView ads.

Bumper video ads combine elements of both of the above ad formats but are best suited to branding campaigns as are TrueView videos.

They are also cheaper per view than TrueView ads. In addition, according to a study conducted by Google, they drive a “significant lift in ad recall.”

Like TrueView ads, Bumpers can include a click-through option but are optimized and most effective for views.

4. Overlay YouTube Ads

If you’re running a reservation sponsorship campaign, you can set up overlay ads on partner videos. YouTube overlay ads are banner advertisements that you’ll often see running along the bottom of a video. They can be simple text ads , or image-based banners.

5. Sponsored Cards

The sponsored product cards can be seen on desktop and mobile devices and the actual card sizes vary. Although this ad size is relatively new, this has become a very popular option for eCommerce advertisers as it is a convenient click-to-purchase option.

Sponsored cards are perfect for an eCommerce company by putting the relevant product or products in the video easily accessible as an overlay on the right side of the video player. A viewer can easily click on the product and be directed right to the online store to purchase the product.
